Sannas (Rice Cakes)

Rice CakesSannas are rice cakes similar to idlis except that the amount of urad dal (split black gram) is less than that used in idlis and the mould in which these are steamed is different.

These are healthy, soft and go beautifully with spicy Indian curries.

Table rice – 2 cups

Parboiled rice – 1 cup

Urad dal (split black gram) – 1/2 cup

Poha (beaten rice) – 1/2 cup

Yeast – 1/2 tsp (We have used active dry yeast)

Sugar – 1 tsp (if you want to make these sweet, more sugar can be added… can then be eaten as a snack)

1. Soak the rice and dal for 2~3 hours

2. Grind this along with the soaked beaten rice with water to form a batter (slightly thicker than pancake batter).

3. Add the sugar and yeast and keep covered for 2~3 hours till the batter rises.

4. Put into sanna moulds and steam in the steamer.
